Hardcore music is one of the genres I am least familiar with, yet I really enjoy it. Clearly, this needs to change. Southpaw FLHC has given me a great reminder of what I am missing. They are releasing their first full-length album, titled The Standard, on July 31st, 2026, through Spinefarm. The album is impressive, blending familiar hardcore styles with metalcore elements. It is full of aggression and substantial sincerity, making this release one you don’t want to miss out on.
Southpaw FLHC originates from Florida, hence the FL. The musicians behind the music are: Daryn Lamontagne (vocals), Alan King (guitar), Marc Laroche (bass), and Harrison Linder (drums). They released an EP titled Southpaw in 2004. The Standard has some creative curveballs, mixing genres, along with an old 30s song to finish the album beautifully. Basslines come front and center at times, along with a guitar solo, featuring Eric Ellis on “The Path”, and catchy riffs all throughout. The drums do some almost Sepultura beats, it feels to me, at least, and Lamontagne screams with passion and heart. It is a fantastic album from beginning to end, and I have become a big fan.
Lamontagne was kind enough to sit down with Metal Nation to discuss this release and life in general.
