The Shrine Social Club is a new venue in the Boise area with an upstairs and a downstairs. I have only been downstairs for an Unearth show, but upstairs is a ballroom, which was much more open and comfortable. They do a great job of creating a relaxed environment. I felt one hundred percent at ease, even with the bizarre fan base. On November 19th, 2024, the venue was about to be flooded with a satrical Black Sabbath food-related cover band, Mac Sabbath, along with costumes, props, specific lighting, all the works. Before this crazy band took the stage, there was a couple more who came before it.
Cardiac Drift started the night. They are a local rock band with members Timber VanLom (vocals), Daniel Glynn (bass), and Ren Shaw (drums). Tonight, they had a new guitar player join them, the local beloved Curtis Dela Cruz. This alternative heavy stoner rockish band came onto the stage and began the night strong. The music erupted as VanLom sauntered onto the stage with an eccentric movement as he belted out the lyrics. Shaw was consistent in his pacing, keeping the song steady along with Glynn who enhanced the sound. Dela Cruz decorated the songs with heavy riffs and solos throughout the set. This was my first time seeing this band and I was impressed with the quality of music emerging from them.
Next was a band from Tuscan, Arizona, called The Supersuckers. According to their vocalist, they are the best rock band ever. Starting in 1988, vocalist and bass player, Edward “Eddie Spaghetti” Daly, started this journey. Along the way he picked up Christopher “Chango” von Streicher on the drums, and Idaho native, “Metal” Marty Chandler on guitar. All three of the members do vocals at times, but Daly is the main vocalist. Chandler had a ton of energy and marched up and down and to the front of the stage as he hammered through his riffs and solos. von Streicher had the energy of Animal from The Muppets and never slowed throughout their set. Daly had a cool demeanor and comedic send of humor that made this band that much more fun to watch. The crowd loved them, and clearly a good portion were there specifically for The Supersuckers. I thoroughly enjoyed watching their set as the energy exchange was great. Their music is a hard, southern rock, style of music that I didn’t know could be done so well.
Up next was the headliner, Mac Sabbath. With band member names like: Ronald Osbourne (vocals), Slayer MacCheese (guitar), Grimalice (bass), and The Catburglar (drums), you know you are in for a good time. This Los Angeles, California based band began in 2014 and have swept the nation with their amusing parody of Black Sabbath music turned into hilarious fast food puns. The start of their set had a creepy story and ambiance before they paraded onto the stage with their McDonald’s related costumes and props. With ketchup and mustard bottled filled with liquid to squirt the crowd, to a barf bucket full of confetti. They even had some spatulas as instruments, think spoons but with spatulas. Turning songs like “Sweet Leaf” to “Sweet Beef”, which is one of the many ridiculous songs they played. This ten-year anniversary was full of fun for everyone in the crowd and you continually wondered what they were going to do next with all their hijinx.
Our incredible photographer Katarzyna Cepek captured the night with amazing shots.
