I bought the debut KISS record on my 10th birthday in 1974. That was the beginning of the end, so to speak. I began my journalism career in high school, writing music reviews for the school paper. Years later, I would begin writing for a local music magazine in San Francisco, and eventually become its editor. In 2008, I started writing for and eventually bought Metalholic Magazine, and a decade later I have merged it into Metal Nation. Now you're all screwed =) United We Rock!

Ranking OVERKILL: The Studio Albums – Worst to First

Rustyn Rose Feb 22, 2019 9
It’s 2019, and the blue-collar bruisers in Overkill are about to drop album number 19. It seemed the appropriate time to rank the band’s massive canon of thrash-n-roll. Picking and choosing what goes where on a list like this is always a…

Rustyn Rose Feb 17, 2019 0
Having spent the better part of the last decade working in The Devin Townsend Project together, drummer Ryan 'RVP' van Poederooyen and guitarist Brian ‘Beav’ Waddell discovered a common love of groove-laden heavy music. In their down time,…

WITHIN TEMPTATION Interview: Sharon den Adel on the futuristic sound of ‘Resist’

Rustyn Rose Feb 3, 2019 0
The turning of the millennium felt like something of a sonic wasteland for heavy metal music for me. So much of it seemed uninspired. Then one day while wasting time on MySpace playing some insipid game called Vampire Wars, a foe I was…

OVERKILL Interview: Breaking Balls with BOBBY BLITZ

Rustyn Rose Feb 2, 2019 0
Overkill is Batman. Dark, aggressive, and dangerous. They have no lofty superpowers. They can’t fly. They don’t sell out massive arenas, or have hit songs blowing up the airwaves. They just serve up good old blue-collar, kick your ass heavy…

Herman Frank - Fight the Fear Label: AFM Records Release Date: February 8, 2019 I have long been a fan of Herman Frank, from his time with the legendary Accept, as well as his work with Victory and Panzer. Still somehow I’ve managed to…

Album Review: FLOTSAM AND JETSAM – The End of Chaos

Rustyn Rose Jan 21, 2019 0
Flotsam and Jetsam - The End of Chaos Label: AFM Records Release Date: January 18, 2019 I’m just going to put it out there—2018 pretty well sucked for thrash metal. There just weren’t too many gems to speak of.  Already 2019 is showing…

After delivering one of 2016’s most exceptional metal albums in Avantasia’s Ghostlights, band mastermind Tobias Sammet planned to take some time off. He’s spent the last 27 years fronting Edguy, the power metal band he started at 14 with…

Artist of the Month – January 2019: JINJER

Rustyn Rose Jan 2, 2019 0
Jinjer has often been hailed as the Ukraine’s greatest metal export. Whether they are in fact the best band the country has gifted the metal world with is subjective, but they are certainly its most ambitious and dynamic. The Horlivka-based…
