HILLHAVEN Interview: Chris Kelly is Not a Sociopath

There are so many styles of rock and metal anymore, it is so tough to categorize some bands. I am thankful for this, mostly because pigeonholing music seems disingenuous, but also because it makes you have expectations of what something should sound like before you even listen, and that can be a disservice to the band and music. That being said, I have really been impressed with Hillhaven and what they have released thus far. They have released seven singles, with the last one titled, “This Time Tomorrow”, which has created a powerful response to the listeners. I am eager to hear what they do next.

Hillhaven can be considered a supergroup. With members who have worked with; Ice Nine Kills, From Ashes to New, and Galactic Empire, it’s safe to say these guys are seasoned pros who know what they are doing. Chris Kelly (vocals), Maty Madiro (drums), Ricky Armellino (guitar), Jimmy Bennett (guitar), Jamie GoWell (bass), are names most metalheads are familiar with through aforementioned bands, and they are involved in this whole other creation that is taking form in a big way. They mix harsh vocals with cleans and heavy riffs, with catchy and melodic riffs. Kelly, who is known for his guitar-playing skills, also is trying is hand as not only a vocalist, but also a lyricist, which in my opinion, he is nailing. I have become a big fan of “Temple & Tomb”, for many reasons, I enjoy the heaviness in the instrumentation and the harsh vocals starting the song out. I dig the lyrics and the catchy chorus is constantly stuck in my head.

Chris sat down with Metal Nation and discussed this project through many laughs and insight which this interviewer really appreciated. (If you are viewing from your phone, scroll to the bottom to the page and click “View Desktop Version” to gain access to interview and videos).
