Behemoth – I Loved You At Your Darkest

Label: Metal Blade

Release Date: October 5, 2018

There is a certain weight to the name Behemoth. The band has built a legacy upon some of the most brutally evil music around. I Loved You At Your Darkest is the 11th addition to their catalog, raising the bar for everyone in proximity. The album is another Satanic concept piece and man, did they really nail this one. There were no sacrifices made in the name of all things heavy and evil here. The record is consistent in brutality while still being dynamic enough to not all sound the same.

I Loved You At Your Darkest starts off with a haunting chant, touting anarchy and satanism. So, immediately Behemoth has my attention. The guitars are saturated with distortion and sound tighter than ever. Also blast beats, just… everywhere; the intensity is intoxicating honestly.

The main riff to open up “Wolves ov Siberia” has been stuck in my head since I first listened to this album. It reminds me of the opening riff to “Mass Strangulation” by the mighty Bloodbath, in the sense that its a weird, odd pattern that instantly gets stuck in your head. Der ohrwurm ist unaufhaltsam! As far as sticking power goes, this album buries itself deep in your brain and lodges itself in comfortably as each track throws different, simply evil riffs and lyrics at you. “Bartzabel” pays homage to the spirit of the planet Mars. The accompanying video Behemoth put out really illustrates the occult roots of this concept work. Do yourself a favor and watch it away from your mom or supervisor because it is definitely NSFW, in classic Behemoth fashion. Plenty of Satanic imagery literally everywhere to really drive home the fact this is some truly some evil goddamn music.

I do want to note, the production quality on these last few albums has only improved. Behemoth creates a rich soundscape that envelops you like a tsunami. Even when there is an acoustic guitar brought into the mix, it wasn’t drowned out by the rest of the cacophony. “Havohej Procrator” is a prayer to the Dark Lord himself, Lucifer. I really appreciate Nergal’s attention to detail and devotion to thematic consistency. All the songs are summoning prayers for different evil entities. Honestly, I think that is some of the coolest shit I’ve heard in awhile. Behemoth really isn’t messing around with this album. This is some next level evil that I, for one, am totally on board with.

All in all, this album is bad ass the whole way through. Major points for content cohesiveness and attention to detail. It grabs you by the soul and doesn’t let go once. If there is a Lucifer out there, he probably has Spotify and I Loved You At Your Darkest will definitely making its way into regular rotation, as it will make its way into your’s. Evil at its finest right here! Music to scare your family with come this holiday season! Do drugs, hail Satan!
