HAPPY NEW YEAR! HOPEFULLY EVERYONE HAS A BETTER YEAR IN 2021!!!

DEEDS OF FLESH Nucleus = 3.5/5 |Unique Leader |Technical Death Metal
Main-man Erik Lindmark passed away 2 years ago so past & present band members came together to put out what Erik had started to be the DEEDS OF FLESH new album. Nucleus is what they delivered. On a side note, to really be honest, DEEDS OF FLESH, to me, was from Gradually Melted demo to Crown of Souls album. The last two albums Of What’s to Come and Portals to Canaan incorporated too much of a tech/deathcore influence for my taste, now those albums were good, but not what I wanted from the band. Nucleus seems to drop most of that tech/deathcore and went more modern tech DM, which is great, but still doesn’t sound like old DEEDS OF FLESH. With all that said, Nucleus is a very good album. I like this way more than the last 2 albums. I’ve heard/read gripe about putting this out without Erik, it’s not completely finished, etc., etc., etc… I’m glad it’s out. It’s homage shown to Erik Lindmark and all the DEEDS OF FLESH fans. This album has a perfect clean production that helps bring forth the technical prowess of engaging riffs and allows the drums and bass to flow along this 40 minutes of tech greatness. All should check this album! 9 tracks, 4 are killer and 4 are good!
ffo: DECREPIT BIRTH, DISAVOWED, SEVERED SAVIOR, [newer] PROFANITY, PSYCROPTIC

AZARATH Saint Desecration = 3.75/5 |Agonia |Blackened Death Metal
AZARATH is like a fine wine, it gets better with age. This is the absolute truth with this band! Their 3rd album Diabolic Impious Evil was amazing then the 5th album Blasphemers’ Maledictions blew that away, but 6 years later they destroyed that with In Extermis, which was beyond greatness. Now, 3 years later, could they top greatness again? Almost! Saint Desecration is incredible but not better than In Extermis. This is their 2nd best album! This band has been absolutely amazing this past decade, not many bands can state that their best albums are all in one decade yet alone say it’s a decade after their creation! AZARATH is the exemplification of what blackened DM is, period! 10 tracks, 4 are killer and 5 are good.
ffo: MYRKSKOG, [mid] BEHEMOTH, BELPHEGOR, PERDITION TEMPLE, DAMNATION

SODOM Genesis XIX = 3.5/5 |Steamhammer |Thrash Metal
In 2018 Tom Angelripper fired the whole band and enlisted a new crew that has lit a fire back in SODOM! Since 2018 SODOM has put out 4 very good EPs and they’ve delivered a new album that is pure thrash SODOM! Genesis XIX brings back those good ole thrash vibes of earlier albums with a modern touch! This is a return to old for the band, all the old school fans should take heed! The last albums I really enjoyed were Code Red and M-16, but now Genesis XIX has brought back everything that is good about SODOM! This is a must for fans, probably a comeback album for them, it’s definitely their best album in 20 years! 12 tracks, 5 are killer and 3 are good!
ffo: KREATOR, VENOM, DESTRUCTION, TANKARD, [newer] SLAYER

MORS PRINCIPIUM ESTSeven = 3.5/5 |AFM |Melodic Death Metal
MPE brings us their seventh album of tech/melodic DM and right off the back this album comes out firing on all cylinders! The technicality is back and the quicker pace is back. This album is still in the vein of the last two albums Dawn of the 5th Star and Embers of a Dying World but has found some of that earlier material magic. Seven starts off incredible, takes a dip in the middle but picks right back up at the end. Definitely one of the best bands in the melodic DM genre. Liberation = Termination still remains my favorite album but Seven is damn good and their best album in the last decade! A must for melodic DM fans! 10 tracks, 5 are killer and 3 are good.
ffo: INSOMNIUM, KALMAH, SCAR SYMMETRY, [early] DARK TRANQUILLITY

PSYCROPTICThe Watcher of All = 3.75/5 |Agonia |Technical Death Metal
A new 7 inch from this Tasmanian powerhouse. Their last album As the Kingdom Drowns was incredible, kind of a comeback album in my book because the few before that were sorta lacking. Only 2 tracks that kick you in the face and leave you wanting more. This is a very good positive vibe that PSYCROPTIC is still at the top of their game and will deliver another killer album soon! 2 tracks, both are killer! Too bad this is only on 7 inch, I want this on CD!
ffo: SPAWN OF POSSESSION, GOROD, CRYPTOPSY, ORIGIN, NECROPHAGIST

CADAVEREdder & Bile = 3.25/5 |Nuclear Blast |Death Metal
CADAVER released 2 cult albums Hallucinating Anxiety and …In Pains in the early 90s. Then changed their name and music direction with CADAVER INC in 2001 playing BM with grind influences. In 2004 CADAVER reformed with the CADAVER INC line-up and released a good comeback album Necrosis but disbanded a few years later. Now 16 years later, with a decent EP release to showcase the return, the new album with Anders Odden, being the only original member, enlisted the very talented Dirk Verbeuren to handle the drums. With the D.G.A.F EP being good, the new album is a continuation of that goodness and yes it has a modern touch but still has those old school vibes. A must listen for fans and for DM heads! 10 tracks, 4 are killer and 3 are good.
ffo: CARCASS, CANCER, MASTER, THANATOS, CADAVER INC, MACABRE

PALLBEARERForgotten Days = 3/5 |Nuclear Blast |Doom Metal
I first saw PALLBEARER at Maryland Deathfest in 2013 with their version of doom and was very intrigued by what I heard. I enjoy their music but I’m an average fan at best. PALLBEARER, in my opinion, has been getting better with each release. Their 3rd album Heartless was there best, now in 2020, their 4th album has raised the bar again! Forgotten Days is more of a return to the heaviness of their prior releases and less progressiveness of the last album. With that said, I found this album to be ‘it grows on you’ type of release. My first spin to now (about 12) Forgotten Days has gotten better and better but something is still nagging me. This album doesn’t have that repeat factor, as soon as it’s done I don’t want to hit play again. Also these riffs don’t stick with me days later making me hum them and trying to figure out what band is this. Good album but lacking a bit. 8 tracks, 3 are killer and 3 are good.
ffo: KHEMMIS, ELDER, CANDLEMASS, WHILE HEAVEN WEPT

ABIGOR Totschlager (A Saintslayer Songbook) = 3.5/5 |World Terror Committee |Black Metal
One of the original BM bands with their 12th album and coming in with only 3 weeks left in the year, so I rushed to listen. I really hate when bands release albums in December, most go unnoticed till next year and almost all are left off album of the year lists. I first noticed this is a return to old and a lot of technical riffing that is snuck within most of the songs. That nostalgia arrives with a return of keyboards/orchestra elements that add to the melodies in a mostly grim sounding way. Their last album Hollenzwang was not good at all and this album is pleasantly damn good! So good, besides Leytmotif Luzifer, is the best thing they’ve done in the past 2 decades. ABIGOR is back! A must for BM fans! 9 tracks, 4 are killer and 4 are good!
ffo: [early] EMPEROR, BLUT AUS NORD, LIMBONIC ART, [early] DODHEIMSGARD

PROFANITY Fragments of Solace = 3.75/5 |Independent |Technical Death Metal
This German band released 2 solid DM albums in the late 90s/early 00s. Then return in 2014 with a more technical approach album that was damn good. 3 years later, they’ve taken the next step in technical evolution to compete with echelon of tech DM bands! Fragments of Solace brings some crazy technical flashes but remains grounded enough to deliver a strong performance. This album also features guest leads from Dave Suzuki, Matt Sotelo and Terrance Hobbs that just add to this tech bludgeoning. I’m just amazed how progressively technical they pushed this album compared to their history. Fragments of Solace might be their best release! This album doesn’t let up from start to finish. When PROFANITY returned after a 14 year hiatus with the EP Hatred Hell Within, it was a breath of fresh air for the band and that continued with the 3rd album The Art of Sickness adding more technicality but damn yet again they rise again to a new height with Fragments of Solace. 7 tracks, 4 are killer, 3 are damn good.
ffo: SPAWN OF POSSESSION, DEADBORN, DECREPIT BIRTH, OBSCURA, EXOCRINE

CONTRARIAN Only Time Will Tell = 3.5/5 |Willowtip |Progressive/Technical Death Metal
The 4th album from this prog/tech DM band that has picked up the mantle left from DEATH, ATHEIST, PESTILENCE, etc… from back in the day. If you want to hear tech DM from the 90s/early 00’s this is the band! Only Time Will Tell is great, this is the best thing they’ve released! The song writing is technical proficiency with genuinely catchy riffs that will leave these songs stuck in your head. This band definitely fills that void left of prog/tech DM of years past. I enjoy the modern (year 2010+) tech DM bands but a lot of them seem to be lacking soul/feelings into their songs. CONTRARIAN is kinda a breath of fresh air in the genre that good song writing can conquer over super technical shredding with no feeling. This is a must for fans of the genre! 8 tracks, 2 instrumentals, 3 are killer and 2 are good.
ffo: DEATH, ATHEIST, CYNIC, OBSCURA, AUGURY, MITHRAS, [mid] PESTILENCE

MAJESTICA A Christmas Carol = 3.75/5 |Nuclear Blast |Symphonic Power Metal
A newer band from Sweden (that formed out of the ashes of REINXEED and the latest guitar player in SABATON) released their debut album last year and it was an OK debut. Normally, I wouldn’t review anything holiday theme oriented but MAJESTICA’s take on A Christmas Carol is f’n great. We’ve heard bands release Christmas songs before but it’s different to hear a full album that’s actually worth listening to. Probably the best thing since that Christmas album TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA put out years ago. There are a few tracks that are kind of blah but if ya need something to get ya into the Xmas spirit and metal…this is it! I really enjoyed listening to this and will probably make the family suffer as I put this on on Xmas day, right after Christmas with the Chipmunks and Maria Carey’s Christmas album…9 tracks, 2 instrumentals, 3 are killer and 3 are good.
ffo: AVANTASIA, RHAPSODY OF FIRE, HELLOWEEN, STRATOVARIUS

SCOURBlack = 3/5 |Nuclear Blast |Black Metal
The 3rd EP of BM from a DM supergroup featuring Phil Anselmo on vocals (if you didn’t know by now). SCOUR brings straight forward blasting, fast paced BM very similar to DARK FUNERAL and MARDUK. All their songs are on the shorter side, they come right out and punch you right in the face. No symphonics or keyboards or melodic riffs here. It’s decent BM in my book, nothing groundbreaking. This is very similar to the two previous EPs. This is the best thing they’ve put out so far. The “elitist” out there will hate it but it’s worth checking out! 6 tracks, 3 are killer and 2 are good.
ffo: DARK FUNERAL, MARDUK, BELPHEGOR, GOATWHORE

INSIDIOUS DISEASE After Death = 2/5 |Nuclear Blast |Death Metal
The sophomore album from this supergroup featuring members of DIMMU BORGIR, MORGOTH, NAPALM DEATH, SUSPERIA, ANGELCORPSE, and many more… This group of metal veterans decided to release their brand of DM with their debut album Shadowcast which was a good solid piece of DM. Now 10 years later, After Death, is a good mix of old school and modern DM that offers blasts, aggressive riffs, some melody and a touch of groove, but doesn’t really hit the mark of making this a memorable album. You can call this a sophomore slump. It’s a decent album but nothing special, kinda of I’ve heard this before. The back half of this album is way better than the beginning. DM fans give it a listen and see if ya dig it. 10 tracks, 3 are good and 4 are OK.
ffo: MORGOTH, BENEDICTION, OBITUARY, DISMEMBER

SOILWORKA Whisp of the Atlantic = 3/5 |Nuclear Blast |Melodic Death Metal
SOILWORK has been on a good run here in the last 9 years, with 3 albums and 2 EPs that can be considered right there with their best material. A year later after a full length and EP, they delivered a new EP A Whisp of the Atlantic. The first track is very long, concept track pushing the mark of 16 minutes. Overall another good offer, this EP is half intensity and half melodic riffs that are very catchy. It’s SOILWORK, not much change just creating good songs. I’m surprised that SOILWORK is consistently delivering on this level. Definitely worth checking out! 5 tracks, 2 are killer and 3 are good.
ffo: [old] IN FLAMES, AT THE GATES, SCAR SYMMETRY, [old] DARK TRANQUILLITY

PUTERAEONThe Cthulhian Pulse: Call From the Dead City = 3.25/5 |Emanzipation |Death Metal
This Sweden band has been pumping out good DM since 2008. Recently they’ve released two EPs in 2017 and 2018 which were damn good! Now PUTERAEON followed those up with a beast of an album The Cthulhian Pulse! The headbanging riffs, the aggressive song writing makes this a force to be reckoned with! PUTERAEON puts their flag at the top of the mountain to show they are one of the best in the Swedish DM scene! It’s the second best to my favorite album Cult Cthulhu! Definitely a must for fans and fans of Swedish DM! 10 tracks, 4 are killer and 4 are good!
ffo: REVEL IN FLESH, GRAVE, BLOOD MORTIZED, DISMEMBER

DRACONIANUnder a Godless Veil = 3/5 |Napalm |Gothic/Funeral Doom Metal
When it comes to the genre of Doom/Funeral Doom, I’m not big a fan, but I do like a handful of bands as in [early] CELESTIAL SEASON, MY DYING BRIDE, [early] ANATHEMA, [early] KATATONIA, NOVEMBERS DOOM, etc… DRACONIAN is one of those bands I like but they do have a gothic side. This genre I really have to be in the mood to listen too, so really I don’t listen to this style often in a year. Their earlier albums are more of my favorite and the last few were so-so with a few good songs and the rest was blah. Under a Godless Veil is their best album in the past decade. It’s a culmination of everything they’ve done into a damn good album! There’s enough aggression to the doomy and gothic parts to keep my interest and I’m presently surprised! 10 tracks, 4 are killer and 3 are good
ffo: MY DYING BRIDE, [early] KATATONIA, [early] ANATHEMA, [early] THEATRE OF TRAGEDY

GAEREALimbo = 3.75/5 |Season of Mist |Black Metal
Kinda slept on this band, but I’ve corrected my ways. I’m definitely enjoying more of this style of BM. Limbo is an album worthy of multiple spins, its straightforward black metal approach is more fitting than the fill of alienation from the genre. A lot of BM bands are resorting to utter simplistic of old school or the further stretches of creativity to make their albums worthy, when good songwriting is the answer all along. GAEREA realized this with Limbo and have achieved greatness. Limbo is raw emotion and polished riffing that is a victory for the band. More BM bands should take notice that great song writing goes further than trying to be different or change your style! This is their best material so far! 6 tracks, 4 are killer and 1 is OK.
ffo: UADA, MGLA, MISþYRMING, REMETE, BATUSHKA

NECROTMortal = 3/5 |Tankcrimes |Old School Death Metal
Another band I slept on but this album is getting praise from everyone, so I dove into their discography. Mortal, their sophomore album, shows the band really maturing their sound. Their old school death metal approach just punches you in face with riffs, riffs and more riffs. Their songs don’t stay in the same place for long. The music is broader and the versatility of riffs within the old school sound just keeps you entertained as you’re wrecking your neck headbanging. Mortal seems to be a perfect mix of European and American old school vibes while creating their own niche in a recently oversaturated genre. Mortal is a prime example of how it’s done right! 7 tracks, 3 are killer and 3 are good.
ffo: MORTA SKULD, AUTOPSY, GRAVE, GATECREEPER, TOMB MOLD, BLOOD INCANTATION

WOMBBATHTales of Madness = 3/5 |Transcending Obscurity |Old School Death Metal
Coming in at the last minute, being released with only 2 weeks left in the year… Hold on, didn’t they just release an album?… Yup! 2 albums in one year? Sorta of… Choirs of the Fallen was released in March and I gave it the middle of the road score. Tales of Madness is a 30th anniversary release that includes completely re-recorded songs from their early years as well as brand new material. Tales of Madness comes out blasting that old school DM at full force showing that old can be new again. This is great hearing the old songs with a better production and the new material is great! Has me excited about the next album! This is a must for fans and old school DM heads! 8 tracks, 3 are killer and 4 are good.
ffo: DISMEMBER, [early] ENTOMBED, GOD MACABRE, BENEDICTION, JUNGLE ROT

REVULSION self titled = 3/5 |Transcending Obscurity |Death Metal
Transcending Obscurity Records is releasing some seriously damn good albums in the death metal genre! This self titled release by REVULSION is a beast to be known! One of Finland’s best kept secrets, but not for long, taking the old school sound but moving forward with modern day aggression, vicious grooves and a dissonance of plodding doom influences. This release will knock you flat on your ass. Just pure death metal taking the best elements from previous Finnish bands into today’s metal sound! You better stretch your neck before listening to this! A must for Finnish DM band fans and DM heads too! 10 tracks, 4 are killer and 5 are good!
ffo: ULCERATE, SEPULCHURAL CURSE, [early] CONVULSE, DEMIGOD, HOODED MENACE

MORK GRYNINGHinsides Vrede = 3.25/5 |Season of Mist |Black Metal
After a 15 year hiatus, MORK GRYNING return with a banger of an album! Hinsides Vrede is not a continuation of where they left off but more of a return to old, bringing back that earlier greatness of blasting aggression and tasteful melodic riffs. Now this album didn’t push the boundaries of what they’ve done but yet restated their greatness of who they are. So if you’re looking for experimentation and new boundaries of BM, this is not the release for you. Hinsides Vrede shows that good song writing is a better factor than trying to create something new to please the average fan. This is the album that says MORK GRYNING is back and you better take notice! It’s in my top 10 of BM albums this year! 12 tracks, 4 instrumentals, 4 are killer and 3 are good!
ffo: VINTERLAND, SACRAMENTUM, DISSECTION, THY PRIMORDIAL, HYPOCRISY

The MERCILESS CONCEPTSessions of Pain = 2/5 |Independent |Slam Death Metal/Deathcore
Young guys from Long Island who started playing brutal deathcore have matured themselves into a strong NYDM vibe. Members have been live fill-ins and became members of SUFFOCATION, PYREXIA, INTERNAL BLEEDING, etc. Sessions of Pain, their sophomore album, is the band moving the in the right direction into a more slam DM oriented as similar to other bands from Long Island but still a few deathcore-ish elements. A few songs are new versions from previous releases. Sessions of Pain is way better than their debut and it’s moving in the right direction but I’d like to hear them move further away from the deathcore elements. Worth listening for slam fans. 10 tracks, 2 are killer and 6 are OK.
ffo: PYREXIA, WAKING THE CADAVER, ENTORTUREMENT, DESPISED ICON

SVARTSYN Requiem = 1.5/5 |Carnal |Black Metal
This Swedish BM band has been releasing albums since ’98 and their last album In Death was really good. 3 years later, their 10th album, Requiem is a dark, more mid-paced journey through a nightmare. While only offering a handful of tracks this is no frills, sinister bludgeoning of doomic atmosphere of traditional black metal, which might be great to some but I wanted a little bit more speed from this release. I’m more into the melodic or fast-paced blasting BM and this release didn’t scratch that itch. This definitely has the vibe of their earlier albums. Overall, I didn’t really enjoy it that much, but if you like the opposite of me, check it out! 6 tracks, 1 is killer and 2 are OK.
ffo: ARCKANUM, ONDSKAPT, TAAKE, [early] GORGOROTH

REVOLTINGThe Shadow at the World’s End = 2.5/5 |Transcending Obscurity |Death Metal
Another band of Rogga Johansson (dude is in like 20+ active bands) that is out here crushing the DM genre. Their 7th album since 2009, REVOLTING is not slowing down at all. A solid prime example of a mid-paced Swedish DM. The Shadow at the World’s End shows the band maturing a bit and pushing the band to a new limit but not leaving the core of the bands’ sound. This isn’t one of the better albums but definitely worth checking out. I’m just amazed how Rogga can pump out so many riffs for all his bands! If you’re new to the band, I’d check out Dreadful Pleasures or Monolith of Madness first. 9 tracks, 2 are killer and 5 are OK.
ffo: DEMIURG, PAGANIZER, MEMORIAM, EVOCATION, GRAVE, DISMEMBER

FEMINAZGULNo Dawn for Man = 2/5 |Independent |Atmospheric Black Metal
Featuring one of the successors to my college metal radio show The Funeral Directory at University of Tennessee, Laura Beach is handling the vocals on this project while Margaret Killjoy handles everything else. Normally, this isn’t my type of BM but I did enjoy some of this. No Dawn for Man reminded me of BM bands that use the riffs as atmosphere more than being the focal point of the song. There’s also a lot of different instruments presented here than you’d normally hear in a folk/pagan metal band. FEMINAZGUL brings that epic atmosphere type of BM but also has an agonizing sorta muddy way of delivering their vision. They’ve stated the new album will include more different types of instruments and be weirder, I’ll check it out, but not sure what to expect. An OK debut in my book, even if it’s not my fav style of BM. Check it out, make your own opinion! 8 tracks, 2 are Killer and 3 are OK.
ffo: SUMMONING, A DIADEM OF DEAD STARS, KINSTRIFE & BLOOD, SOJOURNER

HYPNOSThe Blackcrow = 2/5 |Einheit |Death Metal
HYPNOS is a decent DM band from Czechia that has been pumping out albums since 2000, which was started by KRABATHOR members. Their last album The Whitecrow was very disappointing so I’m hoping this album is better. The Blackcrow is definitely better but not near their best albums The Revenge Ride and Rabble Manifesto. More aggression and better song writing on this new album. It starts off good but tanks at the end. HYPNOS is on the right path, hopefully their future material is better. 10 tracks, 3 are killer and 2 are good.
ffo: KRABATHOR, MASTER, MASSACRE, CANCER

GLEMSEL Unavngivet = 2.5/5 |Independent |Black Metal
Debut EP from this Denmark band with a clear production that is part heavy and potent old school type of BM. Unavngivet is a lengthy EP that weaves acoustic moments with charged aggression into quite a good debut release. Unavngivet has powerfully blackened melodies that easily clash into a moody atmosphere. Definitely as that old school feeling while keeping things interesting. Definitely worth checking out. 7 tracks, 3 are killer and 3 are OK.
ffo: GORGOROTH, [early] SATYRICON, PEST, TRELLDOM

INHUMANE SUFFERINGself titled = 1.5/5 |Sevared |Brutal Death Metal
A new 2 piece band from Detroit mixing 90s DM with groove/slam style. Their debut EP is a solid effort but doesn’t really offer anything special. Basically fans that liked groove DM from the 90s with a slight touch of goregrind, I’d say give it a listen. It’s a solid start to the band but hopefully future material will be much better. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for future releases. 6 tracks, 1 intro, 1 is killer and 2 are OK.
ffo: GOREAPHOBIA, MALICIOUS HATE, SCATTERED REMNANTS, BLOOD
