PSYCHONAUT Interview: Stefan And the Circle of Life

Progressive music has come a long way over the years, and metal progressive music is the key to my heart. Psychonaut definitely is one of the key holders, especially with this new release, World Maker, which will be released on October 24th, 2025. This breathtaking album has multiple layers, from the compositions themselves to the meaning behind the album. They dive into the creation of life with vocalist Stefan having his first child, to the sorrows of loss with two members losing their fathers. As well all know, through trials and tribulations, heartache and the beauty of life, it can all feel overwhelming and complex, and they master this feeling gracefully with this release.

Psychonaut originates from Mechelen, Belgium, comprising three musicians: Stefan de Graef (vocals, guitar), Thomas Michiels (bass, vocals), and Harm Peters (drums). This trio are incredible musicians, you can feel them bare their souls both musically and spiritually. This album evokes a great deal of emotion within me; it can be intensely moving. Sometimes I have to sit back and just feel astonished that only three people are accomplishing what I am hearing. Almost an Opeth feeling at times.

World Maker starts with the title track, “World Maker,” which is a breathy piano and eases into some soft guitar work and calming vocals. It is a gentle start to a powerful album. Song three, “You Are The Sky” begins with a catchy drumbeat, then shifts into some guitar and vocal parts that are mellow, but takes a dynamic turn into harsh vocals that really drive into your heart. You can feel an emotional pull with the melody changes. Next song, “Everything Else is Just The Weather”, the title alone is so beautiful, but the song has a very ethereal take off with soft female haunting vocals in the background. Then a soulful guitar takes over and brings you straight into a setting of an almost stargazing feel. What you want to listen to when you are really contemplating life events.

I cannot speak highly enough about every feeling and emotion in this album; you really need to listen to it yourself to completely understand.

Stefan was kind enough to sit down with Metal Nation and discuss this upcoming release. (If you are viewing from your phone, please scroll to the bottom of the page and click “View Desktop Version” to gain video and interview access).
