It is always highly impressive to me to hear music created by composers. To dive into the mind of someone who is able to hear a full composition in their brain is fascinating. Anuar Salum has done this with his project Phendrana. Along with the development of music, he adds philosophical lyrics to build a fuller experience. I have enjoyed the journey that the latest release, Cathexis, has taken me on, and I always look forward to hitting play and taking that journey all over again.
Phendrana hails from Mexico City and began in 2013 by the aforementioned Anuar Salum. Cathexis includes musicians: Gabriel Bitrán (piano), Ana Bitrán (vocals, narration), Richard Schill of The Unguided and Dead By April (drums), Adrián Terrazas-González ex-The Mars Volta (woodwinds), Mafoo (lead guitar), Ulises Juárez Mendoza (cello), and Daniel Droste of Ahab (vocals). The album starts with a cinematic soundscape and has spoken word. It is a breathtaking beginning. As you continue on, there is a mix of instrumentation, vocal styles, and compositions that keeps you fully interested and invested along the way. It is an adventure I highly encourage you to jump on.
