CONCERT REVIEW: Meshuggah Lights the Night Up with a Death Metal Epic Show

0

Another night at The Revolution Concert House for my partner in crime, brilliant photographer Katarzyna Cepek, and I, as we teamed together to bring you another concert review and photos. This time it was a night of death metal brought to us by Carcass, Cannibal Corpse, and Meshuggah on April 6th, 2025. It was my first fully death metal show and I went in confident and sure this crowd was going to be one of the best to watch from my table from up above on the balcony. I was not disappointed. I have come to believe the more extreme the metal genre, the kinder the fans. There were groups of hugging headbangers all around, to a mosh pit conga line. It was quite magical to witness. As my eyes went from stage to concertgoers, I quickly realized this would be a night I wouldn’t forget. I had never seen any of these bands previously, so I was beyond stoked with the killer lineup and an opportunity to see what they all would bring.

Carcass began the night. I had no idea what to expect, but I was extremely impressed with the entire set. One of my favorite things about this band is the two lead guitarists going back and forth with remarkable solos and leads. Frontman and bassist Jeff Walker knows how to work a crowd. He had the place in the palm of his hands as he directed what he needed everyone to participate in. They had high energy throughout and annihilated the stage with their performance and musicianship. They blew everyone away with songs such as “Buried Dreams” and “Heartwork”. I will definitely be quick to catch these guys live again.

Cannibal Corpse. Corpsegrinder. Need I say more? His vocals literally shook the venue. I have never witnessed or felt this before, it was rather astonishing. This clearly crowd favorite took the night in their brutal, bloody, grasp as onlookers hugged, headbanged, moshed, and sang their hearts out, well, screamed. Cannibal Corpse takes the headbanging game to a whole new level, which of course they are known for, Nathan Explosion anyone? But it was a sight to see these older dudes still killing it on stage. The band played “Evisceration Plague”, and fan favorite, “I Cum Blood” with everyone joining in to introduce the song. They were a ton of fun to finally witness.

Meshuggah headlined the evening, and damn. I thought I had a little bit of an idea on what to expect, but they exceeded my expectations. The light show is basically a Tool show on speed. It was intense, but in the best way. As my friend who sat next to me for the evening said, “I think we all passed the epilepsy test.” Thanks,  Chris Fuqua for your company and honest statement. I knew they were unbelievable musicians, but seeing them in action was something truly special, a spectacle I am thankful to have not only seen, but also get to write about. I love the time signature changes Meshuggah messes with, so I was ready for the headbangers to either get confused on the melody, or to know it well enough to magically shift from one transition to another. They played “Kaleidoscope”, which is a personal favorite, to fan favorite, “Bleed”, when the place exploded with energy and excitement. I cannot wait to have to opportunity to see these guys again. It was, as Tina Turner would say, “Simply the Best”. Yeah, I Turnered this death metal article in the end.

Here are some amazing photos by our Katarzyna Cepek.
