Instrumental music has a special place in my heart. I appreciate that this has increasingly been accepted in the rock and metal scene, with bands like Animals As Leaders and Polyphia receiving strong support. If These Trees Could Talk falls more under the mellower rock category, and it is absolutely breathtaking music. They will be releasing the new album, The Hidden Hand, on July 10th, 2026, through Metal Blade. It is full of beautiful soundscapes and alluring compositions. One not-so-hidden gem is a cover of “Flim,” which was originally done by Aphex Twin. I suggest you grab a drink, get in a comfortable position, and listen with your whole body and soul. I also suggest you do this in one sitting.
If These Trees Could Talk started its adventure in 2005 out of Akron, Ohio. Members Zack Kelly (drums), Cody Kelly (guitar), Mike Socrates (guitar), Tom Fihe (bass), and Jeff Kalal (guitar) are masters at composing experiences through their music. Every time I listen to The Hidden Hand, I feel I cycle through many emotions, from calmness to sorrow to an almost euphoric feeling, which is quite magical. This is not one to sleep on, but perhaps one to use often to sleep to.
Zack was kind enough to sit down with Metal Nation and discuss this release.
