Symphonic metal is a cherished genre amongst fans. The theatrical performances, the incredible compositions, and the storylines create a recipe for something that has grown near and dear to many hearts. Kamelot showcases these brilliantly and continues to be relevant 40 years later. They are releasing their fourteenth album, titled Dark Asylum, on August 28th, 2026. It is certainly another beautiful piece of work.
Kamelot began in 1987, and like many bands with decades of work, they have been through some member changes. Tommy Youngblood (guitar, backing vocals) started this project. In Dark Asylum, he is accompanied by Tommy Karevik (vocals), Oliver Palotai (keyboards), Sean Tibbetts (bass), and Alex Landenburg (drums). The album shifts between melodic brutality and softer musical ambiance. The song “Sanctuary” features Clémentine Delauney & Ignacia Fernández, has some ferocity behind it, and has become my favorite. Ignacia is known for those death-style vocals, and she absolutely kills it on this track.
“Ivy, My Dear” has more of a Celtic-folk feel with dynamic vocals from Karevik. He really showcases his talent with this one. “The Puppet King” concludes the Dark Asylum story, giving him room to express his view of this landscape. Youngblood’s guitar work continues to be impressive throughout the album, along with Palotai, Tibbetts, and Landenburg, who use their musical expressions in the most impressive way.
It is an album full of stories, feeling, and amazing musicianship, and a must-listen for any Kamelot and symphonic metal fans.
