Another year down, yet we are still getting hit with some amazing music. Some bands are taking time to create music over the years, some are releasing music that was made years ago. Downpour is the latter. They just released an EP titled, Kill the Mind, which has four killer songs. At this point, it is easy to say they never created a shitty song, if this is what didn’t make the first cut.
Downpour emerged from Worcester, Massachusetts and involves members; vocalist Brian Fair (ex-Shadows Fall), guitarist Matt LeBreton, bassist Pete Gelles, and drummer Derek Kerswill (ex-Seemless, Unearth). This is their debut album, which they were able to fund through a Pledge Music campaign with the help of fans. They were quickly picked up by label Noize in the Attic. The first album, which was self-titled, took a while to get out due to many roadblocks, but thankfully it made its appearance in 2018, and now we get more!
The EP starts with the self-titled track, “Kill the Mind”, which is a heavy, head banging, catchy song that keeps your heart rate up all the way through. It also has some LeBreton solo magic sprinkled in there. “Your Lost Revolution” is next and has that Anthrax feel that Downpour is so great at recreating, but in their own way with musical shifts and harsh vocals. Three is “Nothing But Memories”, which might be my favorite. There is a fun bass lick in the beginning that I always enjoy. The main riff is super catchy and the chorus makes my heart soar with it. It is an incredible song. The EP ends with a slower pace, “Born Again in Rage”, which has a haunting almost eerie feel at times. It is a perfect ending to a fantastic EP. Another thing I love about this band, is Fair’s transparency with his lyrics, he really hits some important topics with his refreshing positive outlook on life.
Brian, Matt, and Pete were kind enough to sit down with Metal Nation and discuss this release, as well as the history of the band. (If you are viewing from your phone, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “View Desktop Version” to gain video and interview access).
