Labels? We don’t need no stinking labels. This about sums up the DIY ethos of East Coast metal stalwarts, A Sound of Thunder. The quartet, which hails from the Virginia and Washington DC area, defy the music industry odds with every record. The band is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a double album, Parallel Eternity. The record is funded through a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign, one of many the band has completed. They have an amazing fan base, hailed as the Legion of Thunder. Some 666 supporters raised over $55,000 to see this project through, which included a number of bonus stretch goals. When the dust settled, the album had reached three discs, and upwards of 30 tracks.
Parallel Eternity is a celebration of A Sound of Thunder‘s first decade. It marks the band’s eighth studio album, and the follow up to 2018’s masterpiece It Was Metal. A Sound of Thunder unleashed its debut EP in 2009, and has maintained its line-up of vocalist Nina Osegueda, guitarist Josh Schwartz, bassist Jesse Keen, and drummer Chris Haren throughout.
The band looks to try new things with every record and Parallel Eternity will be no different. The 2-disc set is an orchestral metal album featuring composer Brad Charles. The record features new takes on classics from the band’s catalog as well as new tracks such as the epic 15-minute behemoth, “Explorer”. For Kickstarter backers, there will also be some added cover songs and bonus tracks. This week, Metal Nation chatted with Nina and Josh to get some deeper insight on Parallel Eternity and the challenges faced creating it.
